Waterfront Programs
DESCRIPTION
Waterfront Programs provides recreational, instructional, academic, and competitive water oriented programming that complements the marine and maritime focus of the Avery Point campus. Our current fleet of small sailboats and sea kayaks are launched from our beach side facility at the north end of campus and used on the waters of the Thames River and Fisher’s Island Sound.
CURRENT OFFERINGS

SAILING CLUB for students, staff, and faculty. (Year-round).

KAYAKING CLUB for students, staff, and faculty. (Year-round).

EKIN 1160: "Basic Watercraft Skills"(Fall and Spring terms; Fridays)
-
Introduces students to the skills necessary to operate small watercraft.

The course includes safe boating, power boat operation, and small boat sailing.

A one credit course.

EKIN 3098: "Intermediate Sailing"(Fall term, Wednesdays)

Builds on EKIN 1160; Basic Watercraft Skills course.

Focuses on the concept of balance to improve boat handling skills.

A two credit course which can be used as a Maritime Studies related course.

EKIN 3098: "Learn to Sailboat Race" (Spring term; Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Builds on EKIN 3098, Intermediate Sailing course.

Focuses on small sailboat one-design racing skills.

SAIL: (3) Collegiate 420’s, (8) Larks, (1) JY15, and (2) Mistral sailboards.

POWER: 16’ Carolina Skiff (with 25 H.P. engine).
PROGRAM MANAGER
Prescott Littlefield has over 25 years of experience as a sailing instructor and sailing program manager. He has worked at numerous yacht clubs on Long Island Sound and Fisher's Island Sound, at the Mystic Seaport Museum, and coached the Williams School Sailing Team prior to coming to UConn, Avery Point. His boating experience includes rowing, dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing, sail boarding, and power boat operation. He has an undergraduate degree in American and Asian History and a graduate degree in Marine Affairs with a coastal zone management specialization. He is a United States Sailing Association small boat sailing, small boat racing, and powerboat handling certified instructor with a State of Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate and 1st Aid and CPR certifications.
