Application and Admission

Q. Do I apply directly to the Avery Point campus or to the Storrs campus?
A: There is only one application for UConn regardless of the campus you want to attend. We encourage you to apply for admission online (www.admissions.uconn.edu) and indicate Avery Point as your first choice campus.

Q: What documents are required for admission?
A: The University requires SAT scores, an official transcript, an application, and a $70 application fee to be considered for admission. Two letters of recommendation are encouraged and an essay is required.

Q: Does UConn have an Early Decision or Early Action Program?
A. An Early Action Program (non-binding) is available with a December 1st deadline.

Q: What are the application deadlines?
A: The application deadline is February 1 for regular freshman applicants to the Storrs campus and July 1 for the Avery Point campus. Transfer applicants must apply by April 1 for the Storrs campus and June 15 for the Avery Point campus.

Q: Does UConn accept the Common Application form?
A: UConn does not accept the Common Application.

Q: Can I apply online?
A: You can apply online at www.admissions.uconn.edu

Q: Does UConn accept AP credit?
A: UConn accepts AP credit if a student earns a score of 4 or 5 on the AP test.

Q: Does UConn require you to take a foreign language in high school?
A: Students enrolled in a high school that offers a foreign language must successfully complete at least two years of the same language. Three years of the same language is preferred.

Tuition and Fees

Q: Does it cost less to attend the Avery Point than the Storrs campus?
A: Tuition is the same, however the student fee is lower for the Avery Point campus which makes the overall cost significantly less to attend Avery Point.

Q: Is there financial aid available and what forms do I need?
A: Financial aid is available and all necessary forms can be found on the UConn website. You can also contact the UConn Office of Student Financial Aid Services at (860) 486-2819.

Academics

Q: What four-year degree programs does Avery Point offer?
A: Avery Point has traditional four-year degree programs in American Studies, Coastal Studies, Maritime Studies as well as a Bachelor of General Studies for students who have completed an associate's degree or at least 60 college credits from an accredited college.

Q: Can I begin a major at Avery Point and finish in Storrs?
A: Students can begin working towards most majors at Avery Point and complete their studies at the Storrs campus.

Q. Are the Coastal Studies and Maritime Studies majors offered only at the Avery Point campus?
A. Although Avery Point's location on Long Island Sound provides a unique location for both of these ocean-focused majors, you can, if you choose, begin either major on the Storrs campus but you must complete your final two years on the Avery Point campus.

Q: How big are the classes at Avery Point?
A: Most classes at Avery Point have less than 40 students with the average class size being 22 to 25 students.

Q: How many classes do I take each semester?
A: Most students will take 4 to 5 classes each semester. A full time student needs to be earning at least 12 credits per semester.

Q: Will I have an advisor?
A: Every student is assigned an advisor.

Q: What happens if I do not know what I want to major in?
A: Avery Point is the perfect place to begin college for students who do not yet know what they wish to study. You would enroll in the ACES (Academic Center for Exploratory Students) program if you are unsure of a major and your advisor will help you explore the various majors and develop an academic plan that is right for you.

Q: What academic support does Avery Point offer?
A: Avery Point has a Student Academic Center that is staffed by professors, student workers and an academic center coordinator. Supplemental instruction programs, tutoring, study groups and assistance with special projects is offered.

Q: Is there an Honors Program at Avery Point?
A: Students who have earned at least 15 credits with a 3.2GPA may choose to participate in an innovative Honors Scholar Program at Avery Point.

Q: Can I Study Abroad as a student at Avery Point?
A: Avery Point students can take advantage of the more than 200 study abroad programs in more than 65 countries than UConn offers.

Q: Are internships available?
A: Students are encouraged and supported in their efforts to get an internship. Avery Point students have had internships with government offices, private businesses and non-profit organizations.

Q: Are there any minors available on the Avery Point campus?
A: The school offers minors in Marine Biology, Underwater Archaeology, Aquaculture Business Management as well as others.

Q: Can I take a class on the Storrs campus if I am enrolled at Avery Point?
A: Students can take courses at Storrs even if they are enrolled at Avery Point. Students will need to provide their own transportation to Storrs.

Q. Does Avery Point participate in the New England Regional Student Program?
A. Yes, both the Coastal Studies and Maritime Studies majors are part of this program and qualified residents of the New England states (outside Connecticut) can pay reduced tuition if attending UConn Avery Point and studying in either one of these majors. Q: Where is the Avery Point campus located?
A: The Avery Point campus is located in Groton, Connecticut and is bordered by Long Island Sound and adjacent to the Thames River in New London.

Q: How far is the Storrs campus from Avery Point?
A: The Storrs campus is approximately 42 miles from Avery Point.

Q: How many students attend Avery Point?
A: Approximately 800 students are enrolled either part-time or full-time at Avery Point.

Q: What is the male/female ratio?
A: 50/50

Q: When did Avery Point become a regional campus?
A: Avery Point became a regional campus in 1967.

Campus Life

Q: What kind of clubs and activities are there at Avery Point?
A: Student Government, Sailing Club, Martial Arts Club, Husky Ambassadors, Photography Club, to name a few. Our Waterfront Program offers sailing, sea kayaking and small water craft instruction.

Q: Does Avery Point have any sports teams?
A: Men's and Women's Basketball and Men's Baseball

Q: Does Avery Point have athletic facilities?
A: Avery Point has its own gymnasium. We have a pool, basketball court and weight lifting area and are the only regional campus with athletic facilities.

Q: Can I have a car on campus?
A: Because there are no dorms on campus, all students can have cars. There are no parking problems on campus.

Q: Is there a Student Center on campus?
A: Yes. The Student Center provides a place for students to gather in between classes for social and recreational purposes. The Student Center has Foosball, TV, and video games.

Housing and Dining Options

Q: Does Avery Point have Residence Halls?
A: Avery Point does not have residence halls. We have however, built a close relationship with two luxury apartment complexes that are just 2-3 miles from campus. Close to 100 of our students live in these apartments. A University Community Assistant also lives in one of the apartments and helps students adjust to independent living and provides workshops and social programming for the students.

Q: Is there any place to eat on campus?
A: Yes. Fin's Café that is open for breakfast and lunch throughout the week.

Visiting Campus

Q: Is the Admissions/Recruitment Office open on weekends?
A: The Admissions/Recruitment Office is open Monday through Friday for "Talks and Tours" and on selected weekend days for special events such as Open Houses and Oceanside Chats for prospective students.
